Dilmun and the burial mounds

How a Bronze Age trading civilisation left temples, towns and tens of thousands of burial mounds across the main island.

Long before pearls or oil, the islands were home to Dilmun, a civilisation known from Mesopotamian texts as a land of trade, fresh water and abundance. Dilmun flourished in the Bronze Age, roughly from the late third millennium BCE, as a hub on the sea route between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.

The burial mounds

The most visible legacy of Dilmun is its burial mounds. Tens of thousands once covered large parts of the main island, built over centuries as individual and family graves. Many have been lost to modern development, but significant fields survive. The largest mounds, near the village of A'ali, are especially striking. In 2019 UNESCO inscribed the Dilmun Burial Mounds on the World Heritage List.

Temples and towns

The temple complex at Barbar, near the north coast, is one of the best-known Dilmun sites, built around a sacred freshwater spring. Qal'at al-Bahrain preserves the remains of a major Dilmun town beneath its later fort. Together, these sites show a society that was organised, prosperous and closely tied to the sea.

How to visit

Start at the Bahrain National Museum, where the archaeology halls and a reconstructed burial explain what you will see in the field. Then visit Qal'at al-Bahrain and its site museum, and drive past the mound fields around A'ali. The mounds themselves are archaeological sites: look from the edges, do not climb them, and leave everything as you find it.

A'ali pottery

A'ali is also known for its traditional pottery workshops, where clay is still shaped and fired in old kilns. Watching the potters at work is one of the simplest ways to connect the ancient landscape with living crafts.
