Bahrain International Circuit
A purpose-built motorsport venue in the Sakhir desert, known for its night races and for hosting the first Formula One Grand Prix in the Middle East.

Venue facts
Where it is
The circuit lies in the Sakhir desert in the south of the main island, around half an hour's drive from central Manama in normal traffic. The landscape around it is open, stony desert, which gives the venue its distinctive look: green verges and white grandstands set against sand.
A short history
The circuit opened in 2004 and hosted the first Formula One Grand Prix held in the Middle East that same year. It was designed by Hermann Tilke, whose firm has shaped many modern circuits. Since 2014 the Grand Prix has run as a night race under floodlights, which keeps temperatures manageable and gives the event its signature look.
Several track layouts can be configured, including a fast outer loop that has been used for a separate Grand Prix. Beyond Formula One, the venue has hosted endurance racing, touring cars, drag racing, karting and track days.

Events and atmosphere
On major race weekends the circuit becomes a small town of grandstands, fan zones and entertainment, often with concerts after the racing. Outside the big events the venue is used for club racing, driver training and corporate days. An open-air amphitheatre at the circuit also stages concerts during the cooler months.
Visitor notes
Plan transport in advance on race weekends, when the roads to Sakhir are busy and shuttle arrangements are often announced by organisers. Bring ear protection, sun protection for afternoon sessions and a layer for the evening, when the desert can cool quickly in winter and spring. Ticketing, gate times and bag rules are set event by event; rely on official event information for those.
