Three heritage walks you can do in a morning

Some of Bahrain's best heritage sites are best seen on foot, and in the cooler months an early start gives you comfortable temperatures and soft light. Each of these three walks fits into a morning.
1. Qal'at al-Bahrain and the shoreline
Start at the site museum to understand the layers of the tell, then walk out across the excavations to the fort on the mound. From the walls, look out over the sea and back towards the towers of Manama. Continue along the coastal path if conditions allow, and finish back at the museum café. The ground is uneven, so wear sturdy shoes.
2. The Pearling Path in Muharraq
Muharraq's Pearling Path links restored merchant houses and other buildings of the pearl trade. Begin near Bayt Siyadi, with its carved facade and family mosque, and follow the route through the old lanes, stopping at buildings that are open and at the small souq. Try a piece of warm halwa before you leave.
3. Bab Al Bahrain and the old market
Start at the gateway of Bab Al Bahrain, built in the 1940s when it stood near the shore, and walk into Manama Souq as the shops open. Explore the textile and spice lanes before the crowds arrive, stop for tea, and finish before the midday break.
Choosing between them
If you only have one morning, choose by interest. Qal'at al-Bahrain is the deepest dive into history, the Pearling Path is the best for architecture and atmosphere, and the old market is the liveliest. All three are within a short taxi ride of central Manama, so with an early start and a long lunch break you can comfortably combine two of them in a day during the cool season.
Tips for every walk
Carry water and sun protection, dress modestly, and ask before photographing people. Opening arrangements for museums and houses change, so check them the day before. For background, see our guides to pearling heritage, Dilmun and the burial mounds and old Muharraq.
